Hilary Frew - Sculptor - Stone - Wood - Bronze - Lead Crystal - Silver.

Hilary Frew F.R.B.S., R.B.A.

"Ideas for pieces start with small newclay figures built onto a wire frame. I help several to interact together until an idea comes which it is possible to complete in the stone. Drawings are made and and the piece is scaled up.

When the carving is completed after several months sometimes a cast is taken of the finished work so that a small Bronze edition can be made.
Bronze patina comes in many colours and is weather-proof. The process is a long one. However both Portland stone and Bronze are very durable and rewarding to work with.

Sometimes my tall, thin, modelled figures are gently caricatured as I like the normal bumpy shapes of real people who have , maybe, dodgy bones and things in their pockets.

Working with Silver the approach is different, size becoming important. Smaller subjects such as insects appeal to me in an abstract way. Unique pieces are made by the lost wax method and hall-marked.

"I sell work through galleries and garden trails, but am happy to consider commissions."
